In January 2013 WXXI’s Hélène Biandudi Hofer traveled to South Sudan to explore the issues of education, diversity, and racism in the war-torn country.  She shares her findings in a full-length documentary, Schools for South Sudan, that focuses on the unique ties between Rochester and this young African nation.

Biandudi Hofer traveled to South Sudan with the Rochester-based non-profit, Building Minds in South Sudan (BMISS), to report on the partnership between Rochester and the village of Mayen-Abun.  BMISS raised money to build a school in that village through the support of Rochester area schools, businesses, community groups, rotaries, philanthropists and more. Schools for South Sudan follows this group as they work to fulfill their mission to build a school in this village. The documentary also includes the work of other Rochester-based non-profits on the ground in South Sudan to bring basic and essential needs such as water and health care to the African nation.

WXXI’s Schools for South Sudan was made possible, in part, through financial support from the Rochester Area Community Foundation.
