Woman With Terminal Cancer Gets To See Daughter Graduate Early

Time Warner Cable News

(WXXI News & Time Warner Cable News) A Geneseo woman who has terminal cancer was granted a special wish on Saturday at the Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester.

Denise Szafran wanted to see her daughter Christine get her master’s degree in education from Buffalo State. But doctors were worried that Szafran would not live until May when the actual graduation was scheduled.

On Saturday afternoon, the Dean of the School of Education at Buffalo State, Wendy Paterson, officiated an early commencement ceremony for Christine in the lobby of the Wilmot Cancer Center.

"My birthday's at the end of the month," Szafran told Time Warner Cable News. "They've spent that last period of time, making sure that one way or the other I would see my daughter walk across that stage with her Master's (degree). They did a good job, did a very good job. So matter what the time length is now, I've seen my daughter graduate."
