Winter Storm Warning for Rochester

(WXXI News & AP) A late winter snowstorm has the potential to dump more than a foot of snow on parts of the Rochester area this week.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warningfor Monroe and some nearby counties starting at 8pm on Monday and running through 8pm on Wednesday.

Total accumulation is anticipated to be between 8 and 16 inches of snow by Wednesday night.

Daytime highs will be in the mid 20s, with lows in the teens, and blustery conditions could blow the snow around making visibility and driving difficult.

A blizzard is expected to hit parts of the New York City area starting Monday with possibly the season's biggest snowstorm dumping up to 18 inches on Central Park.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard watch Sunday for coastal regions including New York City and surrounding areas of Long Island, Westchester County and Connecticut.

A winter storm watch was in effect for a larger area of the Northeast: New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New England.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday that the New York State Emergency Operations Center will be activated Monday evening, with stockpiles of sandbags, generators and pumps at the ready, as well as snow-removal vehicles and salt spreaders.
