Winds bring down power lines & cause other damage

Strong winds brought down power lines and left thousands of people without electricity Wednesday night and early Thursday morning throughout the Rochester area.

At one point, more than 13,000 RG&E customers were without power and more than 2,000 customers of National Grid. Early Thursday morning around 5,100 RG& E customers were without power in Monroe County.

Outages were scattered throughout the region, with reports of some people trapped in their vehicles at one point in Ogden after utility poles came down on Manitou Road. The drivers were eventually freed with the help of first responders and utility crews.

There were also numerous reports of trees down and some damage to buildings around the area.  At one point, the National Weather Service recorded a peak wind gust of 64 miles per hour.

The winds ushered in much colder air, with temperatures falling from the 60s, to the 30s. The high on Thursday will be near 34.
