Whole Foods Commits To Proposed Location For A Store In Brighton

A proposed retail project that would include a Whole Foods grocery store is still working through the approval process in Brighton, but the local developers have now received word from the high-end supermarket chain that it definitely wants to come to the Rochester area.

When the company released its quarterly earnings report on Wednesday, it did mention Rochester as one of the leases it has signed for a new store.

"We’re thrilled to announce this future store and our joining of the greater Rochester community" said Christina Minardi, Northeast Regional President for Whole Foods Market. "As we continue to expand our presence throughout Upstate New York, following our recent opening in Albany, and our forthcoming store in Buffalo, we’re excited to bring our unrivaled quality standards to the Rochester-area, where we hope to foster great relationships with local vendors, add valuable career opportunities to the community and serve as a partner for local non-profit organizations."

The supermarket would be part of a retail project being developed by the Daniele family, which owns Mario’s and Bazil restaurants, as well as other projects throughout the area.

Anthony Daniele says the proposed complex on Monroe Avenue near Clover Street would see Marios restaurant and Clover Lanes remain open for business into 2016. He says Marios is looking to relocate in the same general facility. The Danieles want to bring other retail stores into the plaza as well as Whole Foods.

The project has generated some controversy, with some people in that Brighton and Pittsford area expressing concerns about increased traffic that would come to an already busy area. The developers do plan on putting a traffic light on Monroe Ave. to help with traffic flow.

Town Supervisor Bill Moehle tells us the project is still in the early stages of the review process. He says there will be a thorough environmental review and town officials will be listening to neighbors, both pro and con.

The developers say the store is expected to open in 2017.
