Wegmans Planning First Store In NYC

Wegmans is planning on opening its first store in New York City. A spokesperson for the Rochester-based chain confirms the report that came out Tuesday night in the NY Times about the store ready to open at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The story says that the Navy Yard's board approved a deal for redevelopment of that site. It is being developed by Steiner, the creator of a film studio at that location.

The Times quotes CEO Danny Wegman as saying his company offered to create more jobs than any of the rival proposals, a total of 600 positions.

An official with the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development corporation told the newspaper that they picked Steiner and Wegmans because of the affordability of the store's offerings and a commitment to hire locally for full-time jobs.

Wegmans is expected to release more information on Wednesday.
