Wegmans Leads Consumer Report List Of Best-Rated Supermarkets

Wegmans tops the latest list from Consumer Reports of the best supermarkets. It's based on responses from nearly 63,000 subscribers about overall satisfaction with their supermarket shopping experiences.

The magazine's senior project editor, Tod Marks says that being at the top of the list is not a new thing for the Rochester-based chain.

"They have topped our supermarket ratings here at Consumer Reports for a decade. They offer the rare one-two punch in a supermarket of high quality perishables, exemplary service and competitive prices."

Marks says one thing that stands out for shoppers when they rate a supermarket is the quality of the produce.

"It’s very important, and produce and all the perishable departments, but produce in particular is a critical attribute in how people perceive their stores," he told WXXI News.

Marks believes that one of Wegmans’ advantages  is the fact they are still a family-owned business.

"When you're a privately held company, one nice thing is that you can grow at your own pace, you're not under the influence and pressure of having to answer to stockholders and shareholders and boards of directors in that regard, so they can manage their growth better.”

Wegmans CEO Danny Wegmans issued a statement thanking employees and customers.

“A big thank you goes to our employees. Results like these are only possible because of our people and because we are paying attention to the things that matter most to our customers."
