Wegmans says consumers are buying fewer sugary products like soft drinks.
"And for good reason," said Jane Andrews, the company's nutrition and labeling manager. " There are concerns about long term health. Even young children are becoming obese at rates that scare many of us."
The company is responding by working to reduce the added sugar content in its Wegmans brand products, such as Greek yogurt.
"Last time we saw this happen was with trans fats and we saw consumers really educated and concerned and demanding foods without trans fats,” Andrews said, “We think the same thing might happen with sugar."
With that in mind, Wegmans is now selling petite pastries they hope will satisfy the customer's sweet tooth but help cut down on sugar because of their smaller size.
Last year, the FDA proposed updating the nutrition labels of processed food products to indicate the amount of added sugar.
