Weekend Fire Will Hurt Area Dairy Farmers

Dairy Farmers of America

Many Western New York dairy farmers will have to find a new source of food for their cows.

Over the weekend, a fire in an industrial grain facility in Caledonia owned by Land O’Lakes destroyed a major source of feed for local dairy farmers.

Dean Norton, president of the New York Farm Bureau, expects local dairy cows may see a change in diet.

"It's a critical blow to a major part of the agricultural infrastructure in Western New York. I think our short term focus needs to be on making sure that we find suppliers to fulfill the contracts to our dairy farmers in grain that is needed for those dairy farmers to feed their animals," said Norton

Norton predicts the fire will not affect the consumer cost of dairy products, but will hurt local dairy producers’ bottom line.
