Thanksgiving runs were held all over the Rochester area, but the Webster race is one of the biggest, with over 4,500 people signed up by Thanksgiving morning.
The Dewitt family was gathered on Holt Road, under raincoats and umbrellas, cheering the runners on. Jim Dewitt said they’ve been coming out to the event as a family, both running and watching, for years.
"The guy who started it, Jim May was my wife and I's teacher at Webster. It grows every year and people park in our driveway and its a great way to start the Thanksgiving day."
Jim May, a former English Teacher in Webster started the event as a practice run for his Cross Country Team, as a way to get them to get a work out in on Thanksgiving Day.
Jennifer Dewitt said coming and cheering on the runners is her way of supporting her community.
"It's a great way to get involved, a great way to celebrate life and family and tradition."
Melissa Conkling was out in the rain with her daughter Mya, waiting for her husband to run by. She said the weather didn't affect his decision to run.
"Oh no, he was up and ready to go. Its been different weather every year and hes always got on his A game.”
The race has been a staple in the Webster community for 45 years, bringing runners out from all over the Rochester area since 1972.
This year the signups were capped at 4,572 participants, and spaces were sold out before the run.
Organizers of the Turkey Trot also encouraged runners to donate non perishable food items, to be donated to the Hope House in Webster.
