Wayne County Considers Wind Farm

Lyons, NY – Wayne County residents and officials are discussing the possibility of having a wind farm constructed offshore in Lake Ontario. The New York State Power Authority has commissioned a study of feasible locations for offshore turbines--which includes a stretch along Wayne County. Eleven companies are said to be developing proposals for a wind power project on either Lake Ontario or Lake Erie, but so far, no plans have been put forward. A public hearing will be held next Wednesday night in Lyons. James Hoffman, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, says a bare-bones sketch will be presented, then people will have an opportunity to express their positions and concerns. Hoffman says most public reaction at this point has been negative.

Hoffman says there are concerns about the impact on tourism, the fishing industry, and housing values along the shore. Hoffman says the county's position will be determined by public input.
