Voters Consider School Budgets, Board Members & Some Propositions

Voters head to the polls across New York State on Tuesday to vote on budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.

The polls are open at various times, some as early as 6 a.m., and others as late as noon, so check with your individual district if you are going out to vote.

Districts are again dealing with a state property tax cap, and if they want to exceed that cap, the budget needs a super-majority of 60 percent of voters to pass.  In this area, Victor is one of the districts looking for that ability, with officials saying the increase is needed to keep up with a sharp increase in enrollment.

The NYS School Boards Association says 36 districts are seeking to override the tax cap this year, compared to 18 last year. The state has around 700 school districts.

A number of school districts are also electing board members and some have propositions on various spending items, such as buses.
