Voters Approve Geneva School Budget

genevacsd.org

The second go-round for the Geneva City School District saw a different outcome than the first time residents considering a spending plan. It was the only area school district rejected in last month's voting.

But on Tuesday, a revised budget, which was about $40,000 less than the budget turned down last month, was approved, with just over 63 percent voting in favor. The vote was 1435 to 837.

Officials in the district say that voters turned out in near record numbers to approve a budget with a  1.72 percent tax levy increase, down from the original 1.95 percent proposed increase.

Both proposals exceeded the district’s .34 percent tax levy cap and so required 60 percent voter approval to pass.

“We are thrilled with the results of this vote,” said Superintendent Trina Newton. “The near record turnout and 1,435 yes votes is a clear vote of confidence in the work that our teachers, administrators and support staff are doing. It’s also an indication of how strongly this city believes in its young people, in their future, and in their ability to change the world for the better.”
