Uber now allows tipping of their drivers, joining Lyft in that practice

NPR

If you are already enjoying using the new ride-hailing services, you’ll now be able to tip your driver if you’re happy with the service.

Actually, users of Lyft already had the ability to tip the driver through the app-based service. Lyft pointed that out this week when word came that Uber will now also making tipping part of its app.

Both ride-hailing services had been in New York City, but legislation passed recently that allowed them to come to Rochester and other upstate cities.

Uber’s move to put tipping into its app comes soon after New York City passed a measure requiring tipping in ride-hailing apps used in the city.  Uber says its decision had been in the works for some time.

Uber says the new tipping ability in the app is part of its 180 days of change, something it announced to its drivers recently to provide what the company calls “meaningful changes and improvements’ to the driving experience.

And on Tuesday, Uber says to celebrate the new tipping ability, it will match every tip given by riders to drivers across the U-S including in Rochester.
