Tribute Today For "Native Dancer"

saratoga150.com

SARATOGA SPRINGS (AP) A ceremony will be held in Saratoga Springs to unveil a statue of one of the greatest thoroughbred race horses of all time.

The life-size Native Dancer will finally take its place at Centennial Park during unveiling ceremonies Saturday.

The park located down the street from Saratoga Race Course is a gift to Saratoga Springs by Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson in honor of its 100th anniversary as an incorporated city.

The park was dedicated June 1, but a statue of Native Dancer wasn't done in time. So a Kentucky farm's statue of Storm Cat, another celebrated thoroughbred, has been standing in as a temporary replacement.

Native Dancer won 21 of career 22 races in the 1950s. In 1953, Native Dancer won the Travers Stakes, Saratoga's biggest race.
