Swimmer Rescued From Lake Ontario

usacops.com

Jim Cox, 62, of Holley, and his brother Bill, 51, from Albion took their boat onto Lake Ontario from Point Breeze yesterday afternoon.

The Orleans County Sheriff says they were about three miles away from the Kendall shoreline when Bill decided to jump in for a swim. Sheriff Scott Hess says that's when they turned off the boat's engine.

Trouble is, Jim couldn't get the boat's engine to restart and he and the boat drifted away so far he couldn't even see Bill.

That's when the Orleans County and Carlton Fire Department Marine Units and the Coast Guard were called in, along with the state police helicopter.

Jim was quickly located by deputies using GPS coordinates from his cell phone.

Sheriff Hess says it took more than three hours of searching, but Bill was plucked from the lake about 9 o'clock. He was taken to Strong West Emergency in Brockport for a checkup.

The Cox' boat wouldn't restart and had to be towed ashore.
