Suspicious package causes evacuation of Mary Cariola Children's Center

Spectrum News

Children and workers at the Mary Cariola Children's Center were safely evacuated after a report of a suspicious package on Monday.

That facility serves young people with disabilities.

A statement from Mary Cariola Children’s Center says just before 11:00 a.m. a package arrived via FedEx at the East Henrietta campus. It was not addressed to any specific person, and officials say when it was opened, a note was discovered that raised the concerns of the staff member who opened it.

Rochester Police arrived quickly after a 911 call, and an officer determined that the school should be evacuated. That evacuation involved 98 students and more than 100 staff. Students were moved to two other buildings on campus.

School officials decided to dismiss early since they didn’t know how long the incident might last. Classes were resume as normal on Tuesday.
