A federal grand jury has indicted 56 year old Richard Wilbern in connection with the deadly 2003 armed robbery at the Xerox Federal Credit Union in Webster.
That incident took the life of 51 year old Raymond Batzel. Wilbern was charged last year, 13 years after the shooting. Officials say on August 12, 2003, Wilbern was wearing an FBI jacket and a Marshal’s badge and was wearing a wig.
Authorities say Wilbern shot and killed Batzel near the front door of the credit union, and also shot and wounded a second customer. Wilbern fled, and left behind an umbrella which was later tested and discovered to have his DNA.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, one indictment charges Wilbern with the armed robbery that resulted in Batzel’s death. A second indictment charges Wilbern with the unlawful possession of firearms including four rifles. Wilbern, who has two prior felony convictions, is prohibited under federal law from possessing any firearms.
Wilbern is being held without bail and will be arraigned Friday morning in federal court.
