Survey Shows Small Business Job Growth Growing In January

The latest indexon small business job growth put out by Paychex and a company called IHS shows a spike in growth for the month of January.  In fact, officials say the growth offsets the declines in job growth they saw during 2015.

Paychex CEO Marty Mucci says once again, service-related jobs seemed to show some of the strongest growth.

“Discretionary type services,  personal care, pet care.  I think lower gas prices that have continued have given people more discretionary income to do those things, but that’s a positive thing from that standpoint. The negative is, it’s a lot of part time jobs."

Mucci says milder than expected weather in some parts of the country may have also boosted construction jobs.

The Northwestern U.S. and the southeast saw some of the strongest increases in jobs for small and medium sized businesses.

New York State ranked relatively low in terms of growth, although New York City saw a stronger increase in employment in January.

Mucci says some small business owners may be a bit more reticent to add a lot of jobs this year, partly due to uncertainty about the political environment and regulation.
