ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Supporters of a proposal in New York to require labels on foods with ingredients from genetically modified plants are planning to rally at the state Capitol.
The event gets underway Tuesday afternoon.
Lawmakers haven't set a vote on the measure, which faces significant opposition particularly in the state Senate.
Supporters argue people should know if food contains GMO ingredients. Opponents including food producers and agricultural companies say GMOs are safe and that labels will increase prices while unnecessarily frightening consumers. They successfully blocked the law last year.
Backers of the proposal say they hope the Legislature takes it up before they adjourn the 2015 session within the next two months.
