SUNY Eyes Economic Development

Rochester, NY – State University of New York officials have released a new six-point strategic plan for the public university system. In Rochester Tuesday, SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher said the plan will help position SUNY as the main force behind economic revitalization across New York.

"Everybody knows the economy is suffering, not only in New York but around the country. So a great big public university system which actually is a growth industry can bring revenue in from the federal government, can create jobs, create more graduates prepared for those jobs. This is exactly what New York needs. New York needs revenue and we can produce it."

The plan's numerous initiatives include fostering greater connectivity between the system's 64 campuses, a program to prepare SUNY education students for jobs in high-need school districts, and expanded capacity to train students for health care professions.
