Strong storms result in thousands left without power

A line of swift moving thunderstorms, with strong winds and heavy rain brought down numerous tree branches and power lines throughout Western NY late Sunday afternoon.

The winds gusted more than 60 mph according to data from the National Weather Service.

By early evening, more than 16,000 RG&E customers in Monroe County were reported to be without power. They were scattered throughout the region, with Irondequoit and Pittsford among the hardest hit areas.

As of 6am Monday, the RG&E outages were listed at just over 3,100 customers, and in Wayne County, a total of about 5,000 RG&E and NYSEG customers had no electricity.

Area police and fire crews were kept very busy with numerous calls coming in to 911 dispatchers for trees and wires down, and some roads blocked due to the debris.

In Niagara County, the Buffalo News says that a bounce house at a corn maze became airborne in the strong winds, carrying several children with it and bumping a woman who was standing nearby. Several children were treated for minor injuries at the scene and a 76 year old woman who was near the bounce house was dragged about 20 feet when she was hit, and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
