WILTON, N.Y. (AP)  New York State Police say a trooper has died after he was hit by a vehicle on an upstate road while on duty near a state police station.

Maj. William Keeler says Trooper Timothy Pratt had stopped his patrol vehicle around 6:15 a.m. Wednesday to check out a tractor-trailer parked in the median of the road. Keeler says Pratt was hit by a car after he stepped out of his cruiser.

The 30-year veteran died after being airlifted to an Albany hospital.

The accident happened in front of Pratt's trooper station in Wilton, 35 miles north of Albany.

Police say they don't expect the driver of the car that hit Pratt to be charged.  Pratt's survivors include his fiancee, two sons and a daughter.
