The 450-mile long New York State Barge Canal System has been added to the State and National Registers of Historic Places. That system extends over 18 counties and encompasses 23,000 acres. The canal corridor was among seven projects this week that received New York State Preservation Awards.

Another 22 properties and districs have been nominated to be listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

In our region, that includes:

--The Cox-Budlong House in Scottsville. It was built in 1820 by Isaac Cox, one of the original settlers of Wheatland. The home was renovated in 1969 by later owner Isaac Budlong.

--“Elmwood” which is a property established in the 1850s as farm for William N. Alward, a prominent resident of Nunda in Livingston County who had a large residence built ca. 1855 and used the property mainly for raising horses.

--The Boxwood Cemetery in Medina in Orleans County. The first burial happened in 1849 and it is still serving that rural community.

Being listed on the State and National Registers can help property owners revitalize buildings by making them eligible for various preservation programs and services.

More information on the nominations is available on the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation website.
