Some Senior Services Closed in Rochester Due to Weather Restrictions

Accumulating snow and treacherous driving conditions are preventing some staff and volunteers from providing senior services.

Meals On Wheels is closed, due to weather conditions.

Director Margaret Schweizer says they would have served 500 people today.

"It's really for the safety of our volunteers that we closed today, because they'd be out there on the roads driving."

In the event of a closure, Schweizer says they notify all the people they serve to tell them they will not be receiving a meal, but participants have a shelf-stable meal to make sure they don't go hungry. If that meal is gone, Schweizer says they have twelve staff drivers to use in the event of an emergency.

In the meantime, Schweizer asks the community to check in on their elderly neighbors.

Mary Rose McBride is the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Lifespan. They are also closed for the day, meaning their four elder adult centers are closed including the one in Downtown Rochester.

McBride says a lot of their staff, who provide social services, can work from home as long as they make sure the people they work with are safe.

"Hopefully this is just going to be short-term thing, but what it really impacts is if there's an elder adult that's unable to shovel. It would be lovely if neighbors could pitch in."

McBride says their recent survey of elder adults in Irondequoit showed that a main concern among that population is getting trapped by the snow.
