It has been 17 years in the planning, and by Sunday, the new Wegmans  on East Avenue will be a reality. Workers are busy putting the finishing touches on the new store, which replaces a supermarket  that was more than 50 years old.

The new store  includes a number of amenities the old one didn't have including a much bigger selection of prepared food, such as hot Asian food and also café seating, something the old store didn’t have.

Store manager Tony Carnevale says  the new store is twice as big as the old one, but not as large as Pittsford and many other newer Wegmans supermarkets. That’s because of discussions held over the last several years with people in the community and city officials.

The new East Avenue store has about 150 more employees than the previous store at that location. A total of 625 people will work at the new store. It officially opens Sunday morning at seven o'clock.

The old store was demolished so that the parking lot could be greatly expanded.

The new store also includes Amore, a sit-down Italian restaurant, but that won't open until later in the summer.

The new store also has a mechanical rooster-clock that crows every half-hour. Store officials say they wanted to remind customers of their ties to the farm and organic foods.
