Silver still supports Hevesi
By Peter Iglinski
Rochester, NY – Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says he still supports embattled state comptroller Alan Hevesi.
Silver was in Rochester Thursday for an art opening at the Memorial Art Gallery.
Silver says Hevesi has performed well as comptroller and that the accusations being made against Hevesi are politically motivated. He says anyone accused of acting illegally is entitled to a fair hearing.
The state Ethics Commission this week accused Hevesi of violating state law by failing to reimburse the state for using a staff member to drive his wife. Hevesi has apologized and repaid the state $83 thousand after the issue was made public last month.
A grand jury in Albany is considering criminal charges against Hevesi and the governor may announce Friday that he'll ask the state Senate to remove Hevesi from office.
Hevesi has said he will not resign and has vowed to fight the charges against him.
