There are a number of ways that local organizations will be marking “Earth Day on Tuesday.
Earth Day started in 1970, on April 22nd when about 20 million Americans took to the streets and parks, rallying for a more sustainable environment.
The event may not be as high profile as it was in 1970, but there are still plenty of events in the Rochester area on Tuesday. They include:
--A vigil on the Pont de Rennes bridge from Noon to 2:00 p.m, to draw attention to the condition of the Genesee River.
--Rochester City and state officials will cut a ceremonial ribbon at 11:30 a.m. in the City Hall parking lot to signify that the city’s new electric vehicle charging stations are ready for use.
--RIT will host a student competition from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability where the students look for ways of reducing the environmental footprint of various activities.
And several local organizations will join forces to turn four city parking spaces on Gibbs Street into a temporary urban park. That takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in front of Java’s Café.
