Another phase of renovations is scheduled to begin at the George Eastman Museum this summer.
Starting in June, construction will begin on the east porch of George Eastman's historic home. The floor of the porch will be replaced, as well as its roof.
"And it's a flat roof, of course, so water will pool there so it will be replaced," said Kathy Connor, curator of the Eastman Legacy Collection. "And then all the spindles, the balustrades that make the decorative feature around that roof, will be replaced. And then of course, everything will be primed and painted."
The construction work means the east porch and the lawn on the east side of the museum will be closed through the summer, but visitors who pay admission to the museum will still be able to access the terrace garden.
"And actually, all of our gardens are open - the west garden, the terrace garden, and the rock garden - they're all open for viewing, photo sessions for wedding ceremonies,” Connor said. “You just won't be able to get to those things from the east vista."
This is the second phase of a three year renovation project at the Eastman Museum. The project is funded in part by a $500,000 grant from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. Matching funds were raised through private donations.
