Schumer Wants to Start First National Firefighter Cancer Registry

Alex Crichton

Senator Charles Schumer wants to create a new national firefighter cancer registry, noting first responders are exposed to toxic chemicals that can increase the risk of cancer.

He says our firefighters protect us, so we should protect them.

"They are our domestic soldiers, if you will.  What do our soldiers do overseas? They risk their lives for our safety.  What do our firefighters do in Rochester, Monroe County, and throughout America? They risk their lives for our safety," he said.

Schumer brought his proposal to Ladder #4 on University Avenue in Rochester.

He says the registry would compile epidemiological information related to cancer incidence among firefighters.

It would make anonymous data available to public health researchers, and as the registry grows,  it could lead to the development of advanced safety protocols and safeguards for firefighters.

Schumer adds it would also increase the collaboration between the CDC and all parties involved to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of the registry.

Rochester Fire Chief John Schreiber says for firefighters diagnosed with cancer, this would provide the CDC with better information which would lead to better medical for our first responders.

"Without data, it can be very difficult to diagnose and provide prevention efforts and as well as treatment," he said.

Senator Schumer says the bill, the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, has support in both houses of Congress.
