New York Senator Chuck Schumer is pushing for legislation that will ban e-cigarette companies from marketing those battery-powered nicotine devices directly to children. Schumer's action comes after a recent study that reveals that children who smoke e-cigarettes are more likely to eventually smoke conventional cigarettes than those who do not.
Schumer says that companies are marking their e-cigarettes to kids by adding flavors such as vanilla, bubble gum or cotton candy.
The bill being backed by Schumer and several other senatorswold require the Federal Trade Commission to prohibit the advertising, promoting and marketing of electronic cigarettes in a manner that the company knows or should know will have the effect of increasing the use of an electronic cigarette by a child.
