Schumer Says Seneca Falls Should Host A Public Meeting On The New $10 Bill

Senator Charles Schumer was in Seneca Falls on Wednesday to push for a town hall meeting on a new design for the ten dollar bill.

And Schumer feels that Finger Lakes location is ideal to talk about a new face for that currency.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has said that a woman will be featured on the new bill, in the spirit of the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which guaranteed women the right to vote.

The federal government will hold several town-hall style meetings to determine which American woman will appear on the bill, and Schumer says what better place to hold one of those meetings, than in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the Women's Rights movement.

Among the women already suggested for that new  bill, Harriet Tubman, who helped lead slaves to freedom and lived many years in Auburn, and Susan B. Anthony , a leader of the suffrage movement  who lived in Rochester.

When Schumer delivered his remarks at the National Women's Hall of Fame he decided to stay neutral on which woman he would back for the new 10 dollar bill.

“I am hopeful that a New Yorker will be on our currency as this nation celebrates the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment.”

Schumer is also launching an online pollto gather responses from New Yorkers on who they think should be on the new currency.
