New York Senator Charles Schumer says federal money will be coming to Rochester to help a new supermarket operator open up in the College Town project near the University of Rochester.

Constantino’s market,  a Cleveland based company, has been planning to be part of the mix of retail establishments there, but Schumer had said that Constantino’s cannot come in there unless it gets help with  start-up costs.

Now, the senator says he’s received word that Action for a Better Community in Rochester, will receive nearly $750,000 in federal money to help the market locate here. Part of the money will be used to provide a low-interest loan to the grocery store operator. The rest of the grant will then be used to create a job training and placement program to help fill the majority of the store’s 46 new jobs with local-income Rochester area residents.

Schumer says it has been a goal get a grocery store in that area since the Wegman’s on Mt. Hope closed down over a decade ago. He says the new store will now be able to open in April of 2015.
