Dedication ceremonies for the new RTS transit center in downtown Rochester are coming up on Monday, but Senator Charles Schumer and other officials were at the facility off Mortimer Street on Friday to talk about a special promotion to help promote the facility's opening, which happens in late November.

RTS will offer free bus rides from November 28th through the end of the year for anyone who catches a bus at the transit center.

CEO Bill Carpenter says one reason for the offer is to encourage people who use buses downtown to get use to the new facility.

“We’ve also redesigned a number of our routes and schedules so we want our customers to take time to become familiar with the transit center and the brand new bus experience that we have for them, we think the free fare makes that easier.”

RTS officials also hope the free fare will generate some new riders for the bus system.

The fare goes back to a dollar per ride next January. Customers who need to transfer buses at the terminal pay a dollar a ride or they can buy an all-day unlimited ride pass for three dollars.
