Rochester Native Works to Bring Frederick Douglass Story to Big Screen

npr.org

A Rochester native has been working for the past ten years to bring the story of one of Rochester's most prominent historical figures to the movie screen.

Kerry Gleason's screenplay North Star: The Life of Frederick Douglass is now being reviewed by some Hollywood producers.

Gleason believes the film has a good shot at being produced, because many of the battles Frederick Douglass fought for racial equality are still relevant today.  He also thinks Douglass' path from slave to world-class orator and statesman has the power to evoke change and have a healing effect.  North Star won best screenplay at the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival in 2009.
