The latest numbers from the state labor department show more job gains in the Rochester area.

In fact, New York State Labor Analyst Tammy Marino says that the number of private sector jobs in January were at the highest level for that month in more than a decade. The Rochester metro area saw a gain of 5,000 in January, compared to a year ago.

And Marino says unlike some previous months, this time, the gains were spread out over various sectors of the local economy.

"Private education and health care, once again had the strongest showing, however, a number of other key sectors including construction, professional-technical jobs, and finance all reported moderate hiring as well."

Marino says manufacturing is still a bit of a weak spot, but she says losses in that area have started to level off. The statewide unemployment rate in January was 5.8 percent, down one point from a year ago. Rochester's unemployment numbers will be released next week.
