The Rochester area saw another month of job gains in the latest numbers out from the New York State Labor Department. The August figures show a gain of 4300 private sector jobs compared to August a year ago.

State Labor Analyst Tammy Marino says this has been a pretty consistent trend lately.

“Overall we’re looking at another favorable jobs report this month, hiring has been fairly strong in recent months, in fact the pace of hiring picked up slightly in the month of August and as a result the private sector job count grows to its highest August level in more than a decade.”

Marino says that again, private education and health care saw the strongest gains. She says there were also gains in the leisure sector and in professional and technical jobs.

The statewide unemployment rate was 6.4  percent, down from  7.7 a year ago. The Rochester area unemployment rate will be released next week.
