The Rochester area added 3600 private sector jobs last December, compared to December of 2013. NY State Labor analyst Tammy Marino says that continues what has been a pretty steady trend over the last few years.
"Here in the Rochester area we've been in recovery mode for more than four years now and during that time employers have continually reported a fairly modest but very consistent hiring during that time.”
Marino says the strong job growth locally was in private education, healthcare, and the professional and technical sectors.
Marino says we probably won't see too much of an increase in local employment for the next couple of months.
"Employment levels typically fall to their lowest level for the year during the month of January and February, and this is primarily due to a number of seasonal factors; construction activity tends to fall off in the winter months, and seasonal retail hiring also contracts during that time as well."
Statewide, the unemployment rate was 5.8 percent. That was down by more than a point from a year ago. The Rochester area unemployment rate will be released next week.
