Rochester International Jazz Festival Starts Friday

Xerox Rochester Int'l Jazz Festival

The 13th annual Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival kicks off this weekend with more than 250 shows over the nine-day event.

Among the world class artists performing are Willie Nelson and Family, the Gap Mangione Big Band and Pink Martini.

Jazz fest co-producer John Nugent, who appeared on WXXI's 1370 Connection on Monday, says about 187,000 people attended last year’s festival.

"So we're hoping to match that, if not better, because we have a big show on the opening night this Friday with Dr. John," Nugent says. "The first time ever for a major show on opening night.”

The community can check out a number of free shows during the Jazz festival on Gibbs Street, East Avenue and Chestnut and Alexander Streets. The Rochester Plaza Hotel will also host several jam sessions.

AAA and Simcona Electronics Corporation will be providing free shuttle bus service to carry attendees to the different parking ramps in the city.

The festival runs from July 21 to the 29.
