The Rochester Institute of Technology’s Golisano Institute for Sustainability was recognized Wednesday for leadership in green construction.

The U.S. Green Building Council awarded GIS with the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Platinum certification for the design of the college’s “living laboratory."

The RIT facility was rated among the top 1 percent of green buildings in the country, earning the highest recognition.

Assistant Provost and Director of GIS Nabil Nasr is proud of the achievement that he says will be used for research and teaching.

"It really represents a significant addition to our resources and our ability to really be at the cutting edge in many areas related to sustainable technologies and sustainability in general," Nasr said.

The building features energy saving materials, such as glass that allow for light without transferring heat. Geothermal wells, solar panels and wind turbines generate more electricity than the building uses.
