Report Details Complaint By Former U of R Student

rochester.edu

There's more information coming out about a student at the University of Rochester who has filed a complaint about the way the university handled her allegation of sexual assault.

The Huffington Post says it has spoken to the woman about her experience, and who asked to be identified only by her first name, Abigail. The woman is no longer a student at the U of R.

The Huffington Post reporter who wrote the story, Tyler Kingkade, describes a panic attack the woman had last October and what she felt was an overbearing response by campus security, including being forced to the ground and later restrained on a gurney to be taken to the hospital.

"A lot of what she said that led to her wanting to file the complaint involved the incident with security. She described the incident with campus security worse than the actual assault because she felt so deeply violated."

"I think she's obviously disappointed that the student she accused of sexual assault was not found responsible,” Kingkade said. But her complaint is beyond just whether or not he was determined to be guilty. It also (involved) problems she said she had getting academic accommodations in association with her case."

The University of Rochester issued a statement saying that out of respect for students' privacy it does not comment on these cases. It notes that the U.S. Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights is conducting a thorough investigation and the U of R is cooperating fully. The university also says it is confident its Public Safety department and the Office of the Dean of Students and the conduct system followed the proper policies and procedures.
