Remembering Trooper AJ Sperr

NYSP Trooper Andrew "A.J." Sperr

On Sunday, many will remember a State Police officer originally from Greece. Trooper Andrew "A.J." Sperr was killed March 1, 2006, after he came upon two subjects later determined to be involved in a bank robbery in the town of Big Flats in Chemung County.

Investigation determined that Trooper Sperr was fired upon as he approached the subjects' vehicle. Trooper Sperr returned gunfire, striking both subjects before they left the area in a second vehicle, which they had previously staged there for their getaway.

Trooper Sperr was shot multiple times and was on the ground when the fatal round struck him under his belt and vest.

At the time of his death, Trooper Sperr, who was 33, was a ten-year veteran of the State Police assigned to SP Horseheads in Troop E.

He is survived by his parents, four brothers, and six sisters.

Sperr Memorial Park was created in Big Flats in his honor.
