Red Cross officials estimate the ongoing emergency relief operation underway in Louisiana could eclipse $30 million dollars.

Spokesperson for the American Red Cross of the Western and Central New York Region, Jay Bonafede, says the flooding has devastated many businesses and has impacted thousands of thousands of homes.

"The number of people that need help still, and are going to need help for a long time..it's fairly overwhelming how much damage there is," he said.  "As of Monday night, we had 24 hundred people seeking shelter in 18 different shelters across Louisiana, so you see how much the relief effort continues, we haven't really begun the recovery phase."

He says people can help by making a donation to disaster relief.

People can also text the word LAFLOODS to 9099 will that charge a 10 dollar donation to the Red Cross.
