Rochester School officials are reflecting on a tragedy in the district this week. They are talking about Tuesday’s stabbing death of one teen, and the arrest of two others in connection with the incident.
District Superintendent Bolgen Vargas says he has ‘profound pain in his heart.’ In the statement released to district families and staff members, he talks about the death of Trenton Nelson, a 16 year old boy, a student at Robert Brown High School, who was stabbed on North Clinton Avenue in front of a jewelry store.
Police have charged two, 16 year old twin brothers, Darvis Mojena and Juan Mojena. Juan was charged with second degree murder, Darvis was charged with attempted assault.
In his letter to the community, Vargas calls Trent Nelson an enthusiastic and well liked young man, and he says adding to the tragedy is that two other city school district students have been arrested.
Vargas says the district has created a community task force on school climate to help improve student behavior, but he says none of those efforts alone will stop the violence. He says adults must work together to ensure that a tragedy like this never happens again.
The Principal at Robert Brown High School, David Grant says Trent Nelson was a “fun-loving, energetic young man, “ well liked by his classmates and the faculty.
Counseling will be available all week at the school for students and staff.
