A Western New York journalist has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning.

32-year old Adam Zyglis has been recognized for his work at The Buffalo News, where he's been employed since graduating from college.

He says while not many newspapers employ a full-time cartoonist, editorial cartoons are tailor-made for this age of instant information and social media.

"You're able to consume them within a few seconds and get some depth and meaning quickly and then maybe have some humor but at least get the opinion of the artist and maybe engage you to start thinking about the issue,” Zyglis said.

"I treat this as a visual column. I use humor where I can and where it's appropriate. There are times when I want to be sober and serious and there are times when you want to make a strong point."

Zyglis is the third Buffalo News cartoonist to win a Pulitzer.
