Public Survey Period on Body Cameras Ending Soon

npr.org

One of the next steps in the process to put body cameras on Rochester Police Officers is coming to a close.

A survey period of public opinon on the devices will end June 30th.

The city has set aside 2-million dollars for the cameras and the hardware to store the data, according to City Councilman and Public Safety Director Adam McFadden.

He says after all of the surveys and community forums on body cameras, the vast majority of people he's spoken to are in favor of them.

"Almost 90 percent, even officers. It has not been one of these divisive arguments, actually I think people see the positives for both sides."

He says he feels Rochester will have one of the more thought-out camera programs in the country.

McFadden says City Council must still determine the right policy to put into place regarding body cameras so the public is still protected and they feel that city government is transparent.

He says he'd like to see body cameras on Rochester Police by this fall, if possible.
