Public meetings on Erie Canal tree removal set for this week

Controversy continues around a project removing trees from the shores of the Erie Canal.

The Canal Corporation says its essential to remove trees and brush on canal banks to maintain embankment safety and stability.

But protesters say the tree cutting is unnecessary and ruining the aesthetic of the canal, and that there was no warning or transparency from the Canal Corporation of the project.

Residents will now be able to voice their opinions. The Canal Corporation will be holding two informational meetings open to the public this week. Town Supervisors will be in attendance.

One will be held Wednesday January 17th at the Perinton Community Center at 1350 Turk Hill Road.

The other is Thursday January 18th at Pittsford Mendon High School at 472 Mendon Road.

Both meetings will be from 6-8pm.
