City and State officials broke ground Friday on an $8 million dollar renovation and improvement project at the Rochester Public Market.

Improvements at the 111 year old market include a new outdoor shed, new indoor shed to allow for vending year round, new food stand structures, additional restrooms, improvements to the pavement and sidewalks, and more.

Mayor Lovely Warren says the public market has been a hub of commerce and culture for all its 111 years, and it serves customers and vendors from the whole region.

"It's creating jobs, and that's what we really want to do is to make sure we're doing everything more economic opportunities for our citizens, and expanding the public market is the way to do that," she says.

Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul says the state contributed about half of the money for the project.

"This is good for the neighborhood because it's going to continue expanding food choices for the people who have made this neighborhood their home, but also the agricultural impact on the farmers and producers outside the area here who have another place to sell their products, and the jobs that are created," she says.

The market will remain open during construction, which is expected to last 18 months.
