According to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration --70 percent of teenagers who have abused prescription drugs took them from friends or family. To help keep unused prescription meds away from teens, people can dispose of unwanted meds at a number of locations this Saturday from 10am until 2pm. People are discouraged from flushing medicine down the toilet, because it could contaminate the environment and drinking water supply. This event is in line with National Prescription Take Back day. U.S. Attorney for the Western District Bill Hochul Jr says prescription drug abuse is one of the leading causes of death in the country.
The last Rochester Take Back event in April yielded 6 tons of medications -- that’s about 18 million pills. According to Hochul, that’s more than in any other city in the country. Here's a link to disposal sites in the area.
