Poll finds Support for Hydro Fracking, Casino Gambling
By Karen DeWitt
Albany, New York –
A poll finds New Yorkers support hydrofracking in the Marcellus shale region of upstate New York, and think that expanding casino gambling in the state is a good idea.
The Quinnipiac University poll finds New Yorkers, as a whole, support the natural gas drilling process by a 45 to 41%, because they think the economic benefits outweigh any potential harm caused by hydro fracking. But the poll finds voters in upstate, where the drilling would take place, are against the practice 47% to 43% because they worry about possible environmental consequences. New York City residents are evenly split on drilling, while 56% of suburban voters back hydrofracking.
The survey also asked about expanding casino gambling in New York, and found that 64% are in favor. But nearly the same number say more gambling outlets will fuel more gambling addicts.
